Day Seven
Well, judging by the title of this particular blog, I've been here for a week I guess. I don't know what day it is half the time, and while it's been a LONG week, it just doesn't seem like I've been here that long.
So, after talking yesterday about not having to use my alarm clock in a while, I awoke to the sound of that nagging, beeping noise this morning at around 0800. We had a meeting with the PA guy from the Afghan National Police this morning, and I had to be there.
Apparently, our mission to train extends beyond just the Afghan National Army. I found that out last night. The ANA and ANP have two totally separate and different missions, and we talked alot about that in our meeting today. The ANA is much like our own Army, in that, they defend the country. The ANP are just like any other police force, dealing with the people, crime, domestic violence, etc., etc. My only apprehension with working with the ANP is what I've heard about how corrupt they are. Apparently, there are many Taliban within the ANP, and I just don't want to put myself in a situation to deal with that sort of trouble. As it is, if we want to train them and they don't get to come here, we'd have to coordinate a convoy of MRAP's to take us to the city police station, where our Army guys would post security outside while we were in there. Sound like something YOU'D want to do? Hell no. I'm not quite sure how exactly this is going to work out. I don't remember hearing a whole lot about us supporting the ANP, so I might have to make some phone calls to Kabul to ask some questions. I'm certainly not taking my equipment there, and I don't know that they're looking for video support, as much as they are looking for ways to facilitate media. Guess we'll find out in the days to come what will happen with that.
It was another uneventful day after that. Ate lunch, checked e-mail and Facebook and played more pool. It's frustrating to want to work, yet not be able to. I have my training plan all in my head, so I guess I could write it down or something...just to have something to do. The whole six months just can't be like this orelse I will go crazy. I'm probably going to start looking around camp for stories to shoot, just so I can keep myself busy. Our mission is NOT to document the mission of the brigade here, but if I can't do what I came here to do right now, I might as well do something. I'm thinking about doing a "day in the life at Camp Spann" video, highlighting some of the Army guys and what they do every day. I think that could be a cool little 3-5 minute video. Hell, ANY video would be good for me right now. Stay positive, stay positive, stay positive.
The Cowboys-Vikings game will be on tonight at 2200. I might sit in the smaller gym and watch it while I ride the bike for a while. I decided to start back on the weights tomorrow. It's Monday tomorrow and I already have a routine, so I'll work it out starting at the beginning of the week. I'm excited about doing that, not just to get into shape, but to just to be able to do something different to pass the time.
Not too much to write about again today. Many of these posts will probably start looking the same here in the week to come. E-mail, Facebook, pool. Those ANA guys really need to get back here before I lose my mind. I'm here to work.
